Learn more about IBM COS (S3)

IBM's Cloud Object Storage (COS) S3 is a storage platform that is IBM’s Cloud Object Storage (COS) S3 is ideal for holding large amounts of colder production data, such as backups and archives, and very large individual files, such as video files, image files, and genomic data. COS is highly reliable, durable and resilient object storage for that is designed for scale and security. Bluemix users can store and access their content while interactively composing and connecting to apps and services. COS (S3) will be available in a variety of services including Cross-Regional (US, EMEA, APAC) Standard & Vault and Regional Standard & Vault. Accesser and Slicestors compose the basic components of the COS (S3) offering, When data is written a Slicestor automatically encrypts each data segment before it is erasure coded and distributed, when reading data an Accesser End Point reassembles the data from each site/node checks slice integrity and returns the full bit-perfect object back to the end user.

Key features

  • S3 API Accessible Object Storage
  • Infinitely Scalable Storage
  • Encrypted at rest
    • Data at rest is encrypted, specifically with automatic provider Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption and SHA-256 hash
    • Note: TLS 1 is not supported and some tools may fail if they do not support TLS 1.1 or newer
  • Erasure Coding
    • A special algorithm that appends marker data to the original data so that if the original is lost, it can be recovered
  • Cross-Regional and Regional offerings will be available
  • High Durability
  • High Availability
    • Only 2 of 3 COS sites need to be available to recover data

Benefits

  • Infinitely scalable storage
  • Fully managed storage service
  • Encrypted in transit and at rest, by default
  • Drop-in replacement for many S3 tools on the market
  • Competitively priced and very inexpensive storage
  • Regionally resilient
    • Only 2 of the 3 regions need to be available to recover data
  • Cross-Regional
    • Geographic dispersal of data
  • Regional
    • Precision storage deployments
    • Low Latency
    • Data Sovereignty
    • Compliance/Regulations

Three Tiers of COS (S3)

Standard
Standard is a high-performance public cloud offering based on IBM Cleversafe technology with new S3 object storage API interfaces. Available in:
US Cross-Region (SJC, DAL, WDC)
EMEA and APAC on roadmap
Vault
Used for cool workloads - an additional retrieval charge is applied each time data is read. The service includes a minimum threshold for object size and storage period consistent with the intended use of this service for cooler, less-active data.
Cold Vault
Used for cold workloads - an larger additional retrieval charge is applied each time data is read. The service includes a longer minimum threshold for object size and storage period consistent with the intended use of this service for cold, inactive data.

Class Requests Examples
Class A PUT, COPY, and POST requests, as well as GET requests used to list buckets and objects Creating buckets, uploading or copying objects, listing buckets, listing contents of buckets, setting ACLs, and setting CORS configurations
Class B GET (excluding listing), HEAD, and OPTIONS requests Retrieving objects and metadata
