E-mail Delivery Service Server Side Configuration: MailEnable/IIS + Sendgrid

Overview

Here are the steps needed to configure your server for use with Softlayer's E-mail Delivery Service as a SmartHost. The examples below are for standard Windows 2008 or 2012 server with MailEnable or IIS configured as your SMTP service. 

IIS Configuration

  1. Open IIS Manager in Windows
  2. Click on your site (see image below, noting that your configuration will look different), and the main configuration options page will be displayed to the right.
  3. Double-click on the “SMTP E-mail” icon (to get the below screen)
  4. In the email address field: type the email address that will be the “sender”
  5. Click on the “Deliver e-mail to SMTP server” radio button if not already enabled
  6. In the SMTP Server field type: smtp.sendgrid.net. In the Port field type: 587 
  7. Under Authentication Settings choose Specify Credentials and click Set
  8. Add your Sendgrid username and password and click Save. 

 

MailEnable

  1. Open the MailEnableAdmin application.
  2. Expand the Servers tab in the left hand navigation pane. Click localhost > System > Right click on SMTP 
  3. Once you are in the SMTP Properties box click on the Smart Host tab.
  4. Check the box next to Smart Host Enabled.
  5. Under IP/Domain type: smtp.sendgrid.net. In the Port field type: 587.
  6. Check the box that says 'The remote server requires authentication'
  7. Enter your SendGrid username and password and click Apply.
  8. Go to Windows Services and restart MailEnable
