Can I move IP Addresses from one server to another?
Q: Can I move IP Addresses from one server to another?
A: Yes, as long as the IP Addresses are a /30 or larger and in the same Datacenter.

IP Assignments at SoftLayer are performed differently than most hosting companies. Our methodology is different because our network design allows for the addition/deletion of servers and services on the same public and private VLANs without service interruptions, downtime or re-numbering. We utilize a primary and secondary block of IP ranges in our network architecture as described below:

Primary IP – each customer will receive an initial routed 8 block (5 usable) of primary IP addresses to allow for up to 5 servers on the same public VLAN. Each of your servers (up to 5) will receive one individual IP from your primary block of 8 IP addresses. If you anticipate more than 5 servers with SoftLayer, please tell your sales person and we will expand your initial IP assignment to a larger block. Primary IP addresses are bound to each individual server and cannot be moved unless the server is cancelled and replaced by a new server on the existing VLAN.

Secondary IP – each customer will receive an initial 4 block of secondary IP addresses routed to the primary IP address of each server. This will give you 5 usable IP addresses for each server. If you need more IP addresses on each server, engineers will route additional secondary IP addresses to the server. Secondary IP addresses are portable to other servers in the same Datacenter, in routed blocks (4,8,16, etc). IP addresses must be un-bound from a primary address on one server and routed to another primary address on another server to be usable (requires engineering change). Individual IP addresses are not portable across multiple servers on the same VLAN.  Subnets can not be moved outside of the City (Datacenter) for any reason.
