Getting Started with VMware ESX

Getting Started with Vmware ESX

After your ESX server is provisioned the first step to accessing your Vmware server is by using the Vmware vSphere Client. If you do not have the software already installed on your work console you can download it by opening a web browser and typing in your admin Public IP address, the page will look similar to this:

Next you will use the username / password combination provided in your Softlayer management portal.

Next you will use the username / password combination provided in your SoftLayer management portal.

Now you are ready to add virtual machines to your inventory:

The location of the boot images for your virtual machines will be located here on the home screen. Under the Configuration Tab, Right-Click on Storage1 (default) to browse the Datastore.

I have downloaded a CentOS 5.4 net install ISO and will be using it along with mirrors.service.softlayer.com to create a new Virtual Machine.

If you do not already have your own ISO files to install virtual machines you can use SoftLayers site http://mirrors.service.softlayer.com for a few basic Linux distributions. For example a CentOS net installation ISO which is shown below.

For more SoftLayer Mirrors for OS installations you can check this KnowledgeLayer article:

Now that we have our ISO downloaded and placed in our default Datastore the next step is creating the VM.
